Copper Sink Facts

1. Copper is a completely natural material. It has been melted and formed for jewelry, weapons, tools, and vessels for over 5,000 years. Our sinks are made from 100 % copper in the Mexican state of Michoacan, where coppersmiths have worked this precious and useful metal for over 500 years.

2. The beauty of pure, unpolished copper in a sink is unsurpassed. It’s colors are rich, profound, and varied, representing a large section of the visible spectrum, from a shining gold to brown, purple, green, red, black, and the buttery deep “copper” color that emerges from the fire. Factors of climate, heat and type of the wood in the fire influence the color, which is always mottled across the surface. The colors of a natural copper sink change over time, as the “patina” ages and varies.

3. Copper has natural antibacterial properties that kill dangerous bacteria much more rapidly than do stainless steel or porcelain surfaces.

4. We recommend that you clean your copper sink with only soap and water. It can also be gently scrubbed with a soft brush and baking soda. If you wish to slow the process of color change, dry it after each use with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive or harsh chemical cleaners. If an area does brighten from contact with corrosives such as chlorine, it will re-patina over time. Copper will scratch if scraped hard with other metals such as steel, but any scratch will fade over time into the overall patina. Hammered surfaces such as ours show scratches much less than do smooth copper surfaces. The surface of the sink will retain a rich color if it is occasionally sealed with auto wax or furniture oil, or more often olive oil. An excellent, though expensive product is Renaissance Wax.

5. Our pure copper sinks from Mexican have a natural, non-chemical patina. They do not use Selenium Dioxide, which is used by many manufacturers from overseas, and is not recommended for food preparation surfaces. Our sinks are also not lacquered. Though lacquer does initially retard the change of a patina, it eventually wears out in an unsatisfactory and irregular way. Finally, our sinks are guaranteed to contain no lead, which is not true of much copperwork from overseas.

6. Though our sinks are made in Mexico, our inventory is in the United States. We ship immediately, and if there is any necessity for a return, there is no necessity for preparing international paperwork.

7. Our sinks are hand-hammered, meaning that they have been fashioned directly by a craftsman from a sheet of copper, repeated re-heated over an open fire. The hammering is used to shape the sink and to harden the surface. Each sink is completely unique, in color and hammer pattern. A fine artisan has a steady hand and a regularity of pattern that produces quality and beauty unmatched by machine-stamped products. The result is rustic, and no one sink has exactly the same shape as any other, but fine workmanship and the natural beauty of copper bring a richness to a kitchen, bar, or bath that a production line never will.

8. All of our copper sinks are hand-selected and examined, one at a time. We are permanently located both in Mexico and in the U.S., in communication several times a day by phone and e-mail, so we know what our customers need. Though every sink is different, it is important that they be completely rectangular, that the welds be TIG welded with copper, and that bottom of the sink drains well. Copper is malleable enough to be carefully molded into position in a countertop by a professional installer, but many headaches are avoided by careful onsite selection from among the thousands of artisans working in Mexico.
